TREATMENTS

The ideal goal of any treatment journey is to use the techniques of acupuncture and/or herbs to give your body the chance it needs to recover and heal. As you're feeling better, we then phase out treatment until you don't need it anymore, or we find a maintenance rhythm that works for you and your lifestyle.

ACUPUNCTURE

I use a combination of acupuncture techniques that I've learned over the years. These techniques can be split between two main categories of "distal" and "local".

Much of traditional acupuncture systems employ distal acupuncture. Distal acupuncture involves the selection of points distant to the affected area. For example, there are traditional points on the hand that we use for clients with lower back pain. The benefit of this is that we can target areas indirectly so as not to aggravate something that may be injured or irritated. Distal can also target areas such as internal organ dysfunctions that cannot be accessed directly. I have learned many distal styles over the years, but today predominately use Tung lineage and the Tan Balance Method approaches where points are mainly selected below the elbows and knees.

Local acupuncture is where we use points in the affected area to more directly influence the tissue, mostly used in musculoskeletal pain and injury cases. Traditionally this is known as "ashi" needling where we needle the most tender points. While this technique shares similarities today with dry needling or trigger point needling, these approaches are not the same and come from different theoretical backgrounds. During treatment, when I use local acupuncture, I use a combination of traditional ashi techniques as well as modern dry needling, motor point and electro-acupuncture.

CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE

Where appropriate Chinese herbal medicine can help compliment your treatment journey. Herbs can be particularly important for certain cases, especially when dealing with systemic and complex conditions, such as:

Chronic digestive issues

Menstrual irregularities

Menopause

Skin conditions

Chronic fatigue or post viral syndrome

When prescribing herbs, I will create a formula tailored to you. I have been most influenced by Jimmy Chang's Pulsynergy and Taiwanese style prescriptions where traditional formulas are combined together to create a unique formula to suit the person. As you progress, the formula may be changed and adjusted as you improve until ideally you don't need the herbs anymore.
