Types of Herbs Used in Chinese Herbal Medicine

In Chinese herbal medicine, formulas are prescribed according to your unique internal patterns, not simply the name of a disease or your symptoms. Two people with the same conditions or symptoms can have entirely different prescriptions if the underlying causes differ — and the same formula might be used for several different conditions if the internal pattern is the same.

As a Chinese medicine practitioner, my focus is on correcting the internal environment that is giving rise to your symptoms, rather than just chasing them. For example, instead of taking something simply because it has “anti-inflammatory” properties, your herbal prescription is chosen to address the specific imbalances of temperature, moisture and circulation within your body.

  • Xiao Yao San (Free & Easy Wanderer)

One of the most famous and commonly used formulas in modern practice. Traditionally it is used to regulate an overactive nervous system, support digestion and improve blood flow. This formula may be considered for situations such as generalised stress, PMS with bloating and mood swings, stress-related irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), tension headaches, menopausal symptoms, and more.

  • Wen Dan Tang (Warm Gallbladder Decoction)

A key formula for resolving the TCM concept of phlegm-heat and harmonising the Stomach and Gallbladder. Wen Dan Tang may be used in certain cases of anxiety, palpitations, dizziness, or nausea. It can also help with phlegm-related headaches, poor sleep, or digestive sluggishness, particularly when there is an underlying feeling of heaviness and mental cloudiness associated with these.

  • Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction)

This can be a useful formula in cases of what we call a lingering or latent pathogen - where the immune system has been unable to fully resolve some kind of infection or overgrowth and it continues to cause chronic symptoms. Good examples would be post-viral conditions, chronic fatigue syndrome or autoimmunity associated with some kind of infection. It can also be used in early stages of infections if the presentation matches, as well as other chronic conditions involving digestion, the liver and/or the nervous system.

  • Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Drive Out Stasis in the Mansion of Blood Decoction)

This can be a useful formula in cases of what we call a lingering or latent pathogen - where the immune system has been unable to fully resolve some kind of infection or overgrowth and it continues to cause chronic symptoms. Good examples would be post-viral conditions, chronic fatigue syndrome or autoimmunity associated with some kind of infection. It can also be used in early stages of infections if the presentation matches, as well as other chronic conditions involving digestion, the liver and/or the nervous system.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Herbs can continue the therapeutic effects between acupuncture sessions, helping to support your body’s healing process, address underlying imbalances, and improve long-term outcomes. They can be particularly useful for complex, systemic, or chronic conditions.

  • This will depend on many different factors including the nature of your condition, how long you’ve had it, how your body responds to the herbs, if the formula and dosage is right for you, and how consistent you are with taking them. Some people notice changes within days, while most may need several weeks before noticing effects, but we are always monitoring closely and adjusting as needed to get a good outcome for you.

  • This will depend heavily on what we are attempting to correct or manage. The ideal outcome is to use the herbs for a period of time, working to restore better function to your body so that you eventually no longer need the herbs. For acute recent conditions, this may only be days to weeks, while more chronic conditions will tend to be months to years. It’s important to note that your formula will change as your body changes and so it’s important that we monitor your progress, ensuring you’re matched with the correct prescription.

  • Mostly I’m prescribing in pill and capsule form which bypasses any of the potentially confronting tastes and smells of traditionally brewed Chinese herbal medicines. Case depending, herbs may also come in tincture form which is diluted in water, traditional honey pills, or a granule powder form that dissolves in water. In those forms there will be more taste associated, and so will depend on the formula.

  • Many formulas can be taken alongside most medications, however there are certain herb drug interactions that we need to be aware of, so be sure to disclose any medications you are taking.

  • There are certain formulas that can be taken during pregnancy and others that are contraindicated. Make sure that you disclose whether you are pregnant or trying to conceive as this will affect if and what you are prescribed.
